Nurse Sharks
Compass Cay Nurse Sharks
Swimming with Sharks
We anchored off Pipe Cay, next to Compass cay, and enjoyed a private picturesque ancourage all to ourselves. Embarking on a sunny morning with our dinghy we arrive at Compass Cay Marina in minutes, our excitement mingled with a hint of nerves. However, any apprehension quickly dissipated as we stepped foot on Compass Cay's compact marina, where friendly staff members welcomed us with warm smiles. A knowledgeable guide was with us as we made our way to the shallow, crystal-clear waters that are home to a small shoal of nurse sharks. As we approached the designated area, and these magnificent creatures gliding gracefully beneath the surface, their sleek bodies contrasting against the crystal clear waters and sandy backdrop.
Guided Experience
As the guide began giving us instruction, he handed one of us a shark, named Chunky, holding this magnificent creature was beyond compare. Chunky’s topside was rough like sandpaper, but his underside was smooth like a snake or perhaps an alligator, that we wouldn’t know 😊 for sure. The guide provided us with valuable insights about nurse sharks - their behavior, characteristics, and the importance of observing them respectfully. It quickly became apparent these sharks were used to the presence of humans as they gracefully swam past us, unperturbed by our presence.
Majestic Creatures
It was an awe-inspiring experience to swim in such close proximity to these creatures, observing their powerful yet graceful movements. Their bodies, adorned with dark gray and sandy brown hues, gleamed underwater, and their skin exuded an undeniable aura of strength and resilience. We couldn't help but admire their coexistence within this delicate ecosystem. It was as if we were in an aquarium with no walls as there was so much sea life together in a small proximity. While swimming with sharks at Compass Cay offers an adrenaline rush, it also allows for an appreciation of the importance of conservation efforts. The experience serves as a reminder that these creatures play a vital role in maintaining the health and balance of our oceans.
