Cape Cod Canal

As the sky opens up on a breezy summer afternoon, We find ourselves aboard a KINDNESS, embarking on a thrilling adventure under the three magnificent bridges that span the captivating Cape Cod Canal. The anticipation fills the air as we set sail, the boat gliding effortlessly through the dark salty waters, ready to explore this engineering marvel. The journey ahead promises a unique perspective of these architectural wonders that link the historic towns of Cape Cod to the mainland.

Spanning a length of approximately seven miles, the Cape Cod Canal is an artificial channel that connects Cape Cod Bay to the north and the Buzzards Bay to the south. What sets it apart from other canals worldwide is the stunning blend of man-made ingenuity and the uniquely New England coastal beauty.

As you embark on a journey through the Cape Cod Canal, the first thing that captures your attention is its impeccable design. This waterway, created by extensively digging and dredging across the base of Cape Cod, witnessed immense labor and expertise to turn it into a navigable passage for a diverse range of ships. Our first encounter is met with the Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge coming into view. This towering vertical lift bridge, reminiscent of a bygone era, immediately captures our attention. The anticipation builds as we watch, mesmerized, and pass gracefully beneath.

Continuing our voyage, we soon come upon the Bourne Bridge, an elegant arched bridge connecting Cape Cod to the mainland. Its staggering height reaching heavenward, creating a web of interconnected paths that allow us to journey onward. As we pass beneath, the sheer size of the bridge becomes apparent, as if it was a behemoth standing over us, protecting our passage. The boat glides effortlessly beneath the embraces of its span, and we feel almost shielded from the outside world. The sound of the boat's hull gently slicing through the water echoes against the hum of the engine, ensuring a peaceful and introspective moment under this monumental gateway.

As we sail further along the canal, we come to the Sagamore Bridge, the sight of the third and final bridge, and deja vu sets upon us. The Sagamore Bridge, a replica of the Bourne Bridge, standing tall and proud at 135 feet from the waterline, gracefully spans the canal, inviting us into its shadow. As we approach, the bridge seems to grow in magnificence, its intricate details revealing themselves stroke by stroke. The arches gracefully curve above us, leaving us in awe of the artistry of human engineering. The boat sweeps effortlessly beneath the bridge, momentarily swallowed by its grandeur. Passing through, we emerge on the other side, captivated by the sense of scale and history that has embraced us.. As our boat completes the journey through the canal, having passed under the towering three bridges, we are left in awe of the sheer ingenuity that has connected Cape Cod to the mainland.

Dave and Diane’s Anniversary

Preparing for a romantic evening on a warm summer's eve, aboard our floating home KINDNESS, we set out to provision our anniversary celebration. With the setting sun casting its ethereal glow upon the shimmering water, we eagerly took the dinghy, Spirit, ashore.

As we glided through the crystal-clear bay of Cuttyhunk Pond, the gentle sound of the waves cascading against Spirit’s hull created a symphony of serenity. We felt carried by the gentle sea breeze, as we relished the serendipity of experiencing this moment in time, just the two of us. Stepping onto the dock, our feet felt the firmness of the dock, grounding us in the present. The scent of salt lingered in the air, intermingling with the subtle fragrance of a tide left behind. We strolled hand in hand toward a charming lobster shack, its rustic exterior a welcoming sight against the backdrop of the indigo evening. We placed our order, opting for the freshest of lobsters, and marveled at the intricacies of this age-old tradition. With our treasure secured, we gently placed the precious cargo into a bag, embracing their fleeting presence as we carried them back to the dinghy. Our romantic voyage continued, fueled by a sense of anticipation and the pure joy of being on the water.

Returning to KINDNESS, we were welcomed by her elegant silhouette towering against the night sky, a beacon of tranquility amidst the calm anchorage. Our hearts swelled as we prepared the galley for the culinary ritual awaiting us. Lazily rocking to the rhythm of the sea, Diane expertly prepared the lobsters, carefully boiling them to a succulent perfection. The boat was filled with an aroma that stirred our senses and fortified our craving for the delicacies that lay in front of us. As we seated ourselves at the carefully lit table, a feast fit for a king and queen awaited. The crimson shells of the lobsters gleamed under the soft glow of of ambient light. We enjoyed our feast and celebrated another coveted anniversary together remembering what makes the journey so special.
