The Iguanas

The Iguanas of the Bahamas

KINDNESS comes to explore the Iguanas of the Bahamas. The beautiful islands of the Exuma Archipelago have long been known for their crystal-clear waters, pristine beaches, and vibrant marine life. However, nestled among these tropical havens lies a hidden gem that makes the experience of visiting the Bahamas even more extraordinary - the incredible iguanas. Journey with us as we explore three remarkable locations, Allan's Cay, Bitter Guana Cay, and Leaf Cay, where these impressive creatures can be found.

Allan's Cay

Located in the Northern Exuma Cays, Allan's Cay is the first stop on any avid traveler's iguana adventure. As you step ashore onto the sugar-white sand, you're immediately surrounded by dense vegetation, and sprawling limestone rocks.. And there, peering out from the tall grass or sunbathing on nearby rocks, are the famous Bahamian Rock Iguanas.

The striking features of these reptiles, with their stout bodies, spiky scales, and piercing orange eyes, are an instant treat for the senses. As you approach, the iguanas come right out on to the beach seemingly intrigued by your presence. Their remarkably tame demeanor will leave you amazed, as they fearlessly approach visitors, expecting a small gift of food. It is best not to feed the iguanas.

Bitter Guana Cay

Considerably further south, we arrive at Bitter Iguana Cay. As the name suggests, this is yet another idyllic island that provides an incredible experience with the Bahamian Rock Iguanas. Situated just South of Staniel Cay, Bitter Guana Cay offers a more rugged environment, with windswept beaches and stark limestone formations jutting out of the crystal-clear ocean.

As you venture onto the island's northern beach, surrounded by tall grass and native trees, you'll discover iguanas of all sizes, shapes, and colors roaming freely. It's a surreal and humbling encounter that showcases the resilience of these remarkable creatures, who have adapted to survive in such unforgiving and somewhat barren terrain.

Leaf Cay

Nestled within the mesmerizing Exumas archipelago lies another hidden gem that promises an extraordinary encounter with nature's most curious creatures. Leaf Cay, a small island known for its beautiful beach and pristine turquoise waters, offers visitors a truly unforgettable experience: an up-close encounter with the magnificent pink Iguanas that call this enchanting place home.

Stepping onto the powdery white sand beach of Leaf Cay was like stepping into a surreal paradise. The island's lush vegetation provided a soothing shade that offered respite from the radiant Exumas sun. But our attention was immediately caught by movement on the sandy shore, where the first glimpse of the pink iguanas emerged from the vegetation.

As we approached, it became clear that the iguanas of Leaf Cay had become accustomed to the presence of humans. Fearless and curious, they seemed to welcome our visit with genuine interest. Their prehistoric appearances, adorned with spiky tails and rough scales, added to their mystique. But beneath their intimidating exterior, we found a surprising gentleness in their eyes.
