Hog Cay

Christmas in the Bahamas

KINDNESS comes to explore Hog Cay Ragged Islands, Bahamas for Christmas. As the sun slipped below the horizon, casting a warm golden glow over the turquoise waters, I found myself on the deck of KINDNESS, pondering the enchanting journey that lay ahead. Hog Cay, a remote paradise nestled within the untouched Exumas, awaited us. Hog Cay in the Ragged Islands is an amazing remote stop for cruisers. There is a pavilion, hiking paths, snorkeling, spearfishing and more.

Christmas in the Bahamas

Christmas was approaching, and what better way to celebrate than by embracing the natural beauty of Hog Cay and meeting others seeking solace in its pristine shores? This hidden gem, far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, beckoned with balmy breezes and tender whispers of tranquility.

As our catamaran gracefully glided across the shimmering sea, anticipation tugged at my heartstrings. Hog Cay is a place where time slows down, and amidst its untouched allure, we would find the true essence of the holiday season. The island's remoteness offered an opportunity for sincere connections and genuine encounters, far from commercialized chaos.

Upon reaching Hog Cay, our anchor settled beneath the powdery sand, securing us in the embrace of Mother Nature. The island revealed itself as a mosaic of lush greenery, calming breezes, and several half moon white sandy beaches. It was a destination untouched by mass tourism, where solitude danced hand in hand with serenity.

As we explored the island, I couldn't help but notice the magical atmosphere that surrounded us. Laughter rippled through the air as children joyfully played 4 square volleyball and still younger children splashed in the gentle shallows. Families had gathered from different corners of the world, united by a shared desire to reconnect with nature and with each other in this special corner of paradise. There is an elaborate cruisers hangout called Hog Cay Yacht club. The yacht club is maintained by the kind and friendly locals of hog Cay Island, and cruisers gather there for meals, sundowners, entertainment and bonfires.

The absence of commercialism fostered a sense of togetherness, where the simplicity of life took center stage. Instead of fancy gifts and elaborate decorations, the island offered the gift of presence – where families immersed themselves in meaningful conversations beneath starlit skies and reveled in the rhythms of nature.

As we sat around the bonfire on Christmas Eve with a newfound friend, the soft crackling of embers and the gentle ebb and flow of the waves provided the soundtrack to this extraordinary occasion. Pip, our seven year old fireside companion who had been sailing half her life, acquiesced to our request for advice. We were moved by her gracious gentle spirit. She made a permanent mark on our hearts as we reveled in the joy of being present in this moment.
