Cathedral Caves

The Cathedral Caves

KINDNESS comes to explore the Cathedral Cave in Rock Sound, South Eleuthera - Bahamas. Giant tree roots weaved through the cracks of the cave ceiling add to the dramatic surroundings. Some of the roots reach up 60 ft to the surface opening.

Finding the Caves

There are guided tours available but we chose to explore on our own heading to the right from the dinghy dock onto Sherman’s Highway and found the path opposite the Allen Chapel AME Church a little over over 1/2 a mile trek. Follow the trail past Boiling Hole, which is a worthy stop on the way back. There are wooden steps with handrails down to the underground cavern, making it easy for anyone, including children and the elderly. You don’t need a torch as there is plenty of natural light inside the cave. Remember your cameras, many visitors also come to Cathedral Caves to witness the phenomenon known as the "Sunbeam Effect." At certain times of the day, when the sun aligns perfectly with the caves natural skylights, a beam of light streams through, illuminating the interior like a heavenly spotlight. It's a sight that never fails to leave a lasting impression on all who witness it.

Additional Stops

Here are some other stops we made along the way. First stop at Boiling Hole, a blue hole linked to the ocean by caves. An interesting geological site, it is also home to crabs and many bats that you can see flying around even in the daytime.

Ocean Hole: Home to a rich ecosystem and tropical fish, the Ocean Hole is also referred to as a bottomless blue hole. It is also a fish feeding spot where you can spot parrotfish, snapper, and angelfish. Many people go for a refreshing swim and to watch the fish feed and to swim among them. The ocean hole is a couple of blocks inland straight from the dinghy dock and takes you past the Apple hole deli and Grandmas cookies.

While in Rock Sound we took our dinghy, Spirit, over to Frigates bar and grill for a very delicious seafood lunch and a quick jaunt to the grocery store up the road to provision KINDNESS.
